复 m-空间中特殊 Lagrangian 子流形的二阶族是指这样一族子流形：由第二基本形式上的一组逐点条件的满足所刻画。例如，复 3-空间中直纹特殊 Lagrangian 子流形的集合由第二基本形式上的一个代数方程刻画。虽然此类条件的“一般”集合被证明是不相容的，即不存在满足它们的特殊 Lagrangian 子流形，但存在许多有趣的条件集合，其对应族出人意料地大。在某些情形，这些几何定义的族可被显式描述，从而得到特殊 Lagrangian 子流形的新例子。在其他情形，这些条件以新方式刻画了已知族。例如，Lawlor-Harvey 为求解角猜想而构造、且近来被 Joyce 推广的例子，原来是一个自然且易于描述的二阶族。
