摘要
两个基本的theta恒等式，即由Weierstrass提出的三项恒等式和由Jacobi提出的五项恒等式，两者的项均为四个theta函数的乘积，本文证明了它们是等价的。该等价性的一半已由R.J. Chapman于1996年证明。本文还讨论了这两个恒等式的历史、用法及其一些推广。
