Painleve 方程属于类 y'' + a_1 {y'}^3 + 3 a_2 {y'}^2 + 3 a_3 y' + a_4 = 0，其中 a_i=a_i(x,y)。这类方程在一般点变换 x=Phi(X,Y), y=Psi(X,Y) 下不变，因此很难查明该类中两个方程是否相关。我们描述 R. Liouville 的不变性理论，其可用于构造不变特征表达式（合冲），并特别给出 Painleve 方程 I-IV 的此类刻画。
