本文是一篇综述文章。黎曼在其 Habilitationsvortrag 中描述了参数化函数与固体形状的无维流形。我们借此描述无限维中的便利微积分（convenient calculus），它为该光滑映射流形理论的主要事实提供了简洁明了的证明。文章处理了浸入的光滑流形、微分同胚、形状，以及其上的弱黎曼度量，最终得出了一个令人惊讶的事实：对于这些流形，测地距离可以完全消失。
