摘要
本综述性工作的目的是试图揭示自由群及其自同构群和外自同构群理论背后的拓扑/几何直观。我们采用的方法是聚焦于自由群研究中的一系列问题，并利用这些问题的解来引出拓扑/几何工具。我们无意写出使字母数字字符数最少的证明，而是力求写出能最大限度发展广泛适用的几何工具的证明。在第一部分中，我们研究Nielsen和Whitehead在1920年代和1930年代解决的问题，但从现代拓扑/几何视角切入，并表述其解以引出现代工具，包括标记图、自由群的外空间以及外空间中的折叠路径。
