Hilbert 证明了对于大多数 $(n,m)$ ,存在 $m$ 次 psd 形式 $p(x_1,...,x_n)$ 不能写成一些形式的平方和。他的第17问题问:在此情形下,是否存在一个形式 $h$ 使得 $h^2p$ 是一些形式的平方和;也即, $p$ 是一些以 $h$ 为分母的有理函数的平方和。我们证明,对每一这样的 $(n,m)$ ,都不存在单一的形式 $h$ 能以这种方式作为所有 $m$ 次 psd 形式 $p(x_1,...,x_n)$ 的公共分母。
