在过去的二十年左右，我们已经学会了如何理解各种系统中的噼啪噪声。我们在此回顾了用于理解噼啪噪声的基本思想和方法——临界现象、普适性、重整化群、幂律和普适标度函数。这些方法和工具最初是为了理解热系统和无序系统中的连续相变而开发的，我们也介绍了这些更传统的应用，作为基本思想和现象的例证。
