具有连续神经元和非单调传递函数的稀疏神经网络被研究，包括固定突触和动态突触。具有周期方差的噪声刺激导致在固定突触神经系统中控制混沌的机制：适当的外部扰动迫使系统以与刺激相同的周期表现出周期性行为。
