Stephen Toulmin 曾指出，“哲学家向来不习惯过多关注数学辩论的修辞”。将 Toulmin 的论证布局应用于数学能否弥补这一疏忽？Toulmin 的批评者指责该布局要求过多抽象，以致允许互不兼容的重构。数学证明确实可能由根本不同的布局所表示。然而，真正冲突的情形典型地反映了对所讨论证明之本质的潜在分歧。
