众所周知，在广义相对论中，两个度规通过坐标变换相关联的时空在物理上是等价的。然而，给定两个线元，几乎不可能实施最一般的坐标变换以检验时空的等价性。在本文中我们介绍所谓的 Cartan-Karlhede 算法，它提供有限步骤序列以判定两个度规是否等价。本注记的要点是通过若干简单例子阐明该方法，使读者能在实践中学习该算法的基础与细节。
