生态寄生虫学中普遍规律很少。此处我们评估超过100位作者发表的数据，以确定生命周期中宿主数量是否与鱼类寄生虫在不同阶段的聚集程度相关。寄生虫种按分类学分组，尽可能使每组产生20个及以上数据点。多数停留在单一营养级的寄生虫其聚集度低于那些已沿食物链上行的寄生虫。我们使用随机模型表明，捕食者中寄生虫的高度聚集可仅由其猎物中寄生虫的积累导致。该模型进一步拓展表明，捕食者取食行为随年龄的变化可能进一步提高寄生虫聚集度。
