Globular Cluster Messier 4 的白矮星冷却序列

我们基于 123 个轨道的 Hubble Space Telescope 曝光,报告了 Messier 4 星团的白矮星序列,其极限明度为 V = 30, I = 28。白矮星光度函数在 I >25.5 时急剧上升,符合预期的突发 population 行为。Messier 4 的白矮星延伸至大约 2.5 个 magnitudes 暗于当地银河盘白矮星光度函数的峰值。这表明了银河盘与星系后云 Messier 4 之间存在明显且显著的年龄差异。使用相同的标准白矮星模型 (Hansen 1999) 拟合每个光度函数,可得银河盘年龄为 7.3 +/- 1.5 Gyr,而 M4 年龄为 12.7 +/- 0.7 Gyr (2-sigma 统计误差)。
