通过齐次 Bethe-Salpeter 方程对束缚态进行 Poincaré 协变的量子场论描述通常表现出一种内在复杂性，可通过让该形式体系经历各种简化而减弱。所得近似结果的可靠性可通过在束缚态谱性质上施加若干严格约束来评估；其中最为突出的是离散本征值的存在性、数目与位置。
