量子理论表明，观测到的三个规范群 U(1)、SU(2) 和 SU(3) 与三个 Reidemeister 移动相关：扭转 (twists)、戳刺 (pokes) 和滑动 (slides)。本文提供了该关系的背景。随后证明了扭转生成 U(1) 群，而戳刺生成 SU(2) 群。重点在于证明滑动、Gell-Mann 矩阵与李群 SU(3) 之间的关系。并推导了对统一理论的推论。
