新视野号航天器绘制了冥王星和冥卫一相遇半球上的颜色与红外光谱。主导冥王星表面的挥发性冰 CH、CO 和 N 具有复杂的空间分布,这是季节和地质时间尺度上升华、凝结和冰川流动作用的结果。冥王星的 HO 冰“基岩”也被绘制,孤立露头出现在多种环境中。冥王星表面展现出与其不同区域相关的复杂区域颜色多样性。冥卫一的颜色模式较简单,以中性低纬度和红色北部极区为主。冥卫一近红外光谱揭示了具有强 NH 吸收的高度局部化区域,这些区域与小而相对新鲜的撞击喷出物陨石坑相关。
