我们利用纽科姆-本福特定律检验各国在 COVID-19 大流行期间是否操纵了报告数据。我们发现，民主国家、人均国内生产总值（GDP）较高、医疗支出较高以及全民医疗覆盖较好的国家较少偏离纽科姆-本福特定律。该关系对累计报告死亡数和总病例数均成立，但在死亡人数上更为显著。这些发现在第二位数字检验、具有地区数据的国家子样本以及相对于此前 2009-2010 年猪流感（H1N1）大流行中均保持稳健。本文进一步强调了独立监测数据核查项目的重要性。
