The renormalization group improved effective potential in massless models

摘要

The effective potential VV is considered in massless λϕ44\lambda\phi^4_4 theory. The expansion of VV in powers of the coupling λ\lambda and of the logarithm of the background field ϕ\phi is reorganized in two ways; first as a series in λ\lambda alone, then as a series in lnϕ\ln\phi alone. By applying the renormalization group (RG) equation to VV, these expansions can be summed. Using the condition V(v)=0V^\prime(v) = 0 (where vv is the vacuum expectation value of ϕ\phi) in conjunction with the expansion of VV in powers of lnϕ\ln\phi fixes VV provided v0v\neq 0. In this case, the dependence of VV on ϕ\phi drops out and VV is not analytic in λ\lambda. Massless scalar electrodynamics is considered using the same approach.
