作者介绍了一种用于超薄Au和Ag线的几何结构，从头算计算表明，对于这些系统，该结构比先前考虑的平面几何结构更稳定，每个原子约稳定0.1 eV。这种结构对于两种金属以及相关的Ag-Au合金都是绝缘的，Au的带隙为1.3 eV，Ag的带隙为0.8 eV，合金的带隙在0.1 eV到1.9 eV之间变化。该几何结构的绝缘性质并非Peierls失稳的结果，而是从几何结构与电子结构效应之间的相互作用角度进行分析。
