残留星系：它们在哪里？

发现巨型星系随着宇宙年代的演化而生长，随之启动了对寻找可能在今天仍存活且未经显著变化（结构或星际物质组成）的天体的搜索。尽管社区努力不懈，迄今为止只有一个被认为是这些残留天体的坚实候选者：NGC 1277。奇妙的是，这颗星系位于著名的近距离星系团——天鹅星系团的中心。它的定位是纯属偶然吗？残留天体的搜寻者应聚焦于星系团内吗？为此，我们使用了模拟（Millennium I-WMAP7）和观测（纽约大学价值增强星系目录）进行了同时且相同分析。我们在两种框架下的结果一致：在高密度环境中寻找残留天体的概率更大。
