如果对于空间中4s(s+1)个适当选择的方向n，测量n.S得到值s的概率已知，则自旋s的密度矩阵被唯一确定。这些数只是相干自旋态中密度算符的期望值，它们可以通过Stern-Gerlach装置进行的实验来确定。此外，实验数据可以被反转，从而通过4s(s+1)个正参数提供统计算符的参数化。
