1746 年欧拉发表了 E88——Nova theoria lucis et colorum（光与颜色新论），共五章。这是第二章 De formatione ac propagatione pulsuum（论以太中脉冲的形成与传播）的 annotated 译文，其中欧拉认为光在以太中的传播类似于声音在空气中的传播。基于空气的弹性性质，他随后试图找出以太的弹性性质，但显然徒劳无功。尽管如此，他正确区分了流体粒子的局部运动与脉冲本身的运动，甚至尝试估算光速。
