描述偏振模色散的基本方程缺乏数学上正确且令人信服的证明。这一问题源于斯托克斯向量所表示的庞加莱球仅是一个缺乏度量的流形（表示空间）。在这个“空间”中，正交向量是反平行的，因此难以证明使用欧几里得度量的合理性。然而，如果认识到庞加莱球仅表示三维旋转，则可以定义欧几里得伪标量积，从而给出偏振模色散的数学正确证明。
