摘要
KM3NeT 合作组的主要目标是 i) 发现并随后观测宇宙中的高能中微子源,以及 ii) 确定中微子的质量层级。这些目标受到两项近期重要发现的强烈推动,即:1) IceCube 报告的高能天体物理中微子信号;2) Daya Bay、Reno 及其他实验报告的电子中微子对第三中微子质量本征态的显著贡献。为实现这些目标,KM3NeT 合作组计划在地中海建设一个由深海对中微子望远镜网络组成的新研究基础设施。其采用分阶段分布式实施,以最大化获取区域资金、人力资源可用性以及地球与海洋科学界的协同机会。已确定三个合适的深海选址,即法国土伦近海、意大利卡波帕塞罗和希腊皮洛斯。该基础设施将由三个所谓的构建模块组成。一个构建模块包含 115 根弦,每根弦包含 18 个光学模块,每个光学模块包含 31 个光电倍增管。因此,每个构建模块构成一个三维光传感器阵列,可用于探测中微子相互作用产生的相对论性粒子所发出的切伦科夫光。两个构建模块将被配置为以不同方法、更高分辨率和互补视场(包括银道面)充分探索 IceCube 信号。一个构建模块将被配置为精确测量大气中微子振荡。
