摘要
NASA的大型天文台从太空打开了电磁波谱,提供了对地面无法到达波长的持续观测能力。哈勃、康普顿、钱德拉和斯皮策 together 为科学界提供了一套敏捷而强大的望远镜组合,用以攻克广泛的科学问题,并应对快速变化的科学格局。随着现有大型天文台老化或退役,科学界对这些波长的获取将减少,伴随而来的是科学能力的损失。本报告由NASA宇宙起源、宇宙物理学与系外行星探测计划分析组(PAGs)委托撰写,分析了大型天文台时代来自太空的多波长观测的重要性,并给出了跨越广泛天体物理研究的实例。
