已证明一类针对流体力学型四阶微分特征值问题的 Gegenbauer tau 近似能提供实数、负且互异的特征值，这与精确解的情况一致。此类 Gegenbauer tau 方法包括 Chebyshev 和 Legendre Galerkin 方法以及‘无粘’Galerkin 方法，但不包括 Chebyshev 和 Legendre tau 方法。严谨的理论推导与数值结果表明该结果是尖锐的：在此类方法之外会出现正特征值或复特征值。广泛使用的修正 tau 方法被证明等价于 Galerkin 方法。
