目标文章所用的隐喻包括“乐器”、“水波”以及其他类型的机械振子。相应的方程具有惯性性质，并产生依赖于边界条件的驻波。其他与生理学相关的量（如不应期）并未包含在机械振子模型中，但却自然地出现在例如生物森林火灾隐喻中。
