长寿命 π⁺π⁻ 原子寿命的首次测量

摘要

CERN PS 加速器上改进后的 DIRAC 实验首次观测到由质子轰击铍靶产生的长寿命类氢 π⁺π⁻ 原子。其中一部分原子穿越了 96 mm 的间隙,并在 2.1 μm 厚的铂箔中破裂。通过分析观测到的原子对数量 nAL=43661+157totn_A^L= \left.436^{+157}_{-61}\right|_\mathrm{tot},发现 2pp 态的寿命为 τ2p=(0.450.30+1.08tot)1011{\tau_{2p}=(\left.0.45^{+1.08}_{-0.30}\right|_\mathrm{tot}) \cdot10^{-11}} s,与相应的 QED 2pp 态寿命 τ2pQED=1.171011{\tau_{2p}^\mathrm{QED}=1.17 \cdot 10^{-11}} s 不矛盾。该寿命值比我们此前测量的 π⁺π⁻ 原子基态寿命 τ=(3.150.26+0.28tot)1015\tau=(\left.3.15^{+0.28}_{-0.26}\right|_\mathrm{tot})\cdot 10^{-15} s 大三个数量级。对长寿命 π⁺π⁻ 原子的进一步研究将允许测量 ppss 原子态之间的能量差,从而确定 ππ 散射长度,以检验 QCD 预言。
