镍酸盐以其金属 - 绝缘体跃迁（MIT）以及在 T=T_N\'eel 发生的异常磁有序而闻名。在此，我们研究了经受不同水平外延应变的 SmNiO_3 薄膜。我们发现，对薄膜施加压缩应变会强烈影响其原始的块体行为（T_N\'eel<T_MI）。对于较小的压缩应变，实现了 T_N\'eel=T_MI 的区间，块体化合物特有的顺磁绝缘相被抑制，且 MIT 变为一阶跃迁。进一步增加 SmNiO_3 晶格的面内压缩会导致单一金属顺磁相的稳定化。
