This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to a crucial error in example.

We construct normal rationally connected varieties (of arbitrarily large dimension) not containing any smooth rational curves.

We prove that good quotients of algebraic varieties with 1-rational singularities also have 1-rational singularities. This refines a result of Boutot on rational singularities of good quotients.
