自然选择理论有两种形式。演绎理论描述种群如何随时间变化。从一个初始种群和一些变化规则开始，根据这些假设计算种群的未来状态。演绎理论预测种群如何适应环境挑战。归纳理论描述种群变化的原因。从一定量的变化开始，然后将总变化的不同部分分配给特定的原因。归纳理论分析种群如何适应环境挑战的替代因果模型。本章强调原因的归纳分析。
