Thorne环猜想试图精确表述如下概念：当足够多的能量被压缩到足够小的体积内时，引力坍缩就会发生，其中“大小”由周长定义。利用Brown-York质量作为能量的度量，我们可以在球对称情形下给出该猜想的精确表述。考虑球对称时空中的一个二维球面。如果Brown-York质量和周长满足，则该系统要么是从白洞中涌现出来的，要么将坍缩成黑洞。我们证明，使用Liu-Yau质量或Wang-Yau质量无法得到等价的结果。这构成了在一般情况下基于Liu-Yau质量或Wang-Yau质量建立Thorne型环定理的主要障碍。
