消息传递应用针对中间人攻击的安全性依赖于所交换密钥的真实性。对于无法当面会面的用户，手动密钥指纹验证对于确认密钥真实性是必要的。此类指纹可以视觉或言语方式交换，而在何种条件下用户表现最佳尚不清楚。本文报告了一项 62 名参与者研究的结果，该研究调查了基于词语的密钥指纹的视觉与言语比较在性能和感知可用性上的差异，以及个体认知学习风格的影响。结果显示，视觉比较对非安全关键错误更为有效，且被认为提供了更高的信心，然而参与者认为言语比较更容易且需要更少的心理努力。此外，关于个体学习风格对其性能影响的证据有限。
