光学被动旋涡星系:星系团内落过程中恒星形成逐渐抑制的缺失环节

摘要

当星系的恒星形成被终止时,它们从蓝云迁移到红序。在这里,我们报告了由环境效应而非通常引用的并合或强活动星系核所终止的星系:它们以降低的速率形成恒星,这在光学上甚至更不显眼,并表现为一个从蓝色旋涡星系演化为S0星系的过渡种群。这些“光学被动”或“红色旋涡”星系在STAGES项目(以及星系动物园)中,在星系团和星系群的入流区域被大量发现。
