中微子与原子核的相干弹性散射尽管其预测截面是所有低能中微子耦合中最大的,但四十年来一直未能被探测到。这种相互作用模式为研究中微子性质提供了新的机会,并可使探测器尺寸小型化,具有潜在的技术应用前景。我们使用一个低本底、14.6 千克的 CsI[Na] 闪烁体,将其暴露于橡树岭国家实验室散裂中子源 (SNS) 的中微子发射中,以 6.7 西格玛的置信度观测到了这一过程。在高信号本底比条件下,观测到了标准模型为该过程预测的能量和时间特征信号。基于这一初始数据集,我们导出了对非标准中微子与夸克相互作用的改进约束。
