带电π介子极化率的测量

摘要

CERN 的 COMPASS 合作组在质心能量低于 3.5 倍π介子质量的条件下研究了π介子康普顿散射过程 πγπγ\pi^-\gamma\rightarrow \pi^-\gamma。该过程嵌入在反应 πNiπγ  Ni\pi^-\mathrm{Ni}\rightarrow\pi^-\gamma\;\mathrm{Ni} 中,由能量为 190\,GeV 的π介子束轰击镍靶引发。通过分离在最小动量转移 Q2<0.0015Q^2<0.0015\,(GeV/cc)2^2 处观测到的尖锐库仑峰,筛选出准实光子交换过程。基于 63\,000 个事例的样本,在假设 απ=βπ\alpha_\pi=-\beta_\pi(即关联电偶极极化率与磁偶极极化率)的前提下,测定π介子电极化率为 απ = (2.0 ± 0.6\mboxstat ± 0.7\mboxsyst)×104\mboxfm3\alpha_\pi\ =\ (\,2.0\ \pm\ 0.6_{\mbox{\scriptsize stat}}\ \pm\ 0.7_{\mbox{\scriptsize syst}}\,) \times 10^{-4}\,\mbox{fm}^3。这是对该强相互作用基本低能参数迄今最精确的测量,长期以来各种方法得出的结果存在冲突。虽然该结果与此前的专用测量存在张力,但与手征微扰理论的预期相符。此外,还进行了一项将π介子替换为μ介子的补充测量,鉴于μ介子的截面行为是明确已知的,该测量用于对系统误差进行独立估算。
