通过氧空位(VO)控制磁性或铁电性等功能特性是过渡金属氧化物未来发展的关键问题。该领域的进展目前主要通过VO变化及其主要对单一序参量的影响来探讨。本文揭示了一种利用VO同时调控磁性与铁电性的新机制。通过Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-\delta的实验与密度泛函理论结合研究,我们证明氧空位产生Ti3+ 3d1缺陷态,介导了局域Eu 4f7自旋之间的铁磁耦合,并增加了Ti离子的偏离中心位移,从而提高了铁电居里温度。Ti位点的这种双重功能也预示了Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-\delta中存在磁电耦合。
