HST 数据档案包含几幅适合详细研究单个星际簇及其周围环境属性的近距离螺旋星系图像。通过将从 HST 图像中推导出的结构信息与地面光度测量相结合，可以研究星际簇随年龄和质量的属性。虽然年轻星际簇的核心半径和有效半径均随质量相关，但这些关系的斜率小于恒定密度关系的值，暗示平均密度随星际簇质量而增加。这必须在星际簇形成理论中予以考虑。
