摘要
我们提出面向HL-LHC的MATHUSLA(MAssive Timing Hodoscope for Ultra-Stable neutraL pArticles)长寿命粒子探测器的概念设计报告(CDR),涵盖设计、制造与安装工作,安装于CERN Point 5。MATHUSLA是一台规模为40米的探测器,内部充填空气腔,配以装置有scintillator tracking探测器,位于CMS附近。其巨大的尺寸、靠近CMS相互作用点以及约100米的岩石屏蔽,使其能够探测许多高度动机的LPP信号,探测灵敏度远超HL-LHC主探测器的极限,灵敏度可提升一个数量级甚至两个数量级。数据采集预计随着HL-LHC运行的启动而开始。我们提出了新的40米设计:包括各个scintillator棒、波长移频光纤、组织化为tracking层、tracking模块、塔楼模块及抗干扰探测器的布局;定义了高层次的支持电子学、数据采集与触发系统设计,其中包括向CMS供应硬件触发信号,用于记录LPP产生事件;概述了计算系统、土木工程与安全考量;并呈现项目的初步成本估算与时间表。我们还对重要的宇宙射线与HL-LHC μ子背景进行了详细模拟研究,实施完整的轨迹/顶点重建与背景抑制,以最终证明在真实的LPP搜索中实现高信号效率且<1个背景事件。这种灵敏度对于探测器设计或背景模拟的细节均具有鲁棒性。附录提供了various补充信息。
