天文学界已在 Astro2010 十年调查中明确了我们共同的科学愿景。谁将建造这个未来？望远镜资源的昂贵与稀缺使得通过实践学习对学生和早期职业研究者来说极为困难。现在以及未来，我们需要什么来为我们的领域提供深厚的知识、创造力和经验？在麦克唐纳天文台，我们有一个清晰的模型来回答这个问题，并且在培养下一代仪器建造者和观测者方面有着悠久的历史。我们必须支持和维持像麦克唐纳天文台这样的中小型本地资源，以促进我们领域的成功发展。
