Astro2010十年巡礼白皮书:引力与电磁天空中的协同科学

摘要

人们普遍预期,未来十年将见证引力波的首次直接探测。地基LIGO和Virgo引力波天文台正在升级至高级灵敏度,预计将观测到显著的并合率。激光干涉仪空间天线的发射将把引力波窗口扩展到低频,为涉及大质量(M >~ 10^5 M_太阳)黑洞的动力学过程开辟新视野。引力波事件很可能伴随有电磁对应体,并且由于电磁携带的信息与引力携带的信息互补,如果能够协同测量这两种形式的辐射,就可以了解事件及其环境的很多信息。这类测量将标志着跨谱段天体物理学的诞生,桥接两个不同的信息谱段。本白皮书旨在阐述理论和观测方面可能影响广泛天体物理学普遍兴趣问题的未来方向。电磁观测将如何反映引力波源的性质和多样性?引力波源能否被用作宇宙学的互补探针?什么样的跨设施协调将扩大引力和电磁观测的科学回报?
