AGILE 是一项创新且具有成本效益的伽玛射线任务，提议提交给 ASI 小型科学任务计划。该任务计划在 30 MeV - 50 GeV 能段探测伽玛射线，并作为一种开放给国际社区的“观测站”运行。主要科学目标包括研究类鲁宾星系、伽玛暴、银河系天体、未识别伽玛射线源、太阳阳光暴以及扩散伽玛射线辐射。AGILE 计划于 2001 年投入运行，执行为期3年的任务。它将理想地“填补” EGRET 与 GLAST 之间的空白，支持基于地面多波段研究高能天体。
