最初的Halpern-Pearl因果性定义[Halpern and Pearl, 2001]在该论文的期刊版本[Halpern and Pearl, 2005]中进行了更新，以解决Hopkins和Pearl[2003]指出的若干问题。此处该定义再次被修正，其方式(a)导出一个更简洁的定义，(b)处理了Hopkins和Pearl以及许多其他人指出的问题，(c)在标准因果性难题示例中给出合理答案（与原始及更新定义一致），且(d)比原始或更新定义具有更低的复杂度。
