现今的大质量早型(椭圆和透镜状)星系可能在早期宇宙中最巨大的暗物质晕中,通过强烈的、被尘埃遮蔽的星暴(即恒星形成率增加)获得了其大部分恒星质量和重元素。然而,此类大质量星暴前身星体在宇宙大爆炸后多久出现仍然未知。长期以来,人们怀疑 dusty、大质量星暴的红移分布由于选择效应而偏向低红移,近期对红移 z~5 系统的发现证实了这一点。在此,我们报告通过亚毫米颜色选择技术识别出一个红移为 6.34 的大质量星暴星系。我们通过一系列分子和原子精细结构冷却线明确测定了其红移。这些测量揭示该星系中存在一千亿太阳质量的高度激发、化学演化的星际介质,构成了至少 40% 的重子质量。“最大星暴”将气体转化为恒星的速率超过银河系的 2000 倍,这是任何时期观测到的最高速率之一。尽管宇宙恒星形成总体趋势在最高红移处呈下降态势,但似乎足以形成最巨大、最强烈星暴的环境早在宇宙大爆炸后 8.8 亿年就已存在。
