星系的 X 射线观测已从一种新奇事物发展成为天文学的一个成熟领域。这些观测提供了关于黑洞、双星以及星际介质 (ISM) 热相的独特信息，可用于限制宇宙的化学演化以及星系与大质量黑洞的协同演化。这些令人振奋的成果在很大程度上归功于 {\it Chandra} 的高分辨率能力。为了继 {\it Chandra} 之后推动该科学超越现有能力，我们的社区必须建造一台高分辨率（亚角秒级）、大视场（数平方米）的 X 射线望远镜。
