过去 20 年间,Chandra 与 XMM-Newton 巡天结合同天区的多波段成像与光谱数据所做出的发现,显著改变了关于超大质量黑洞(SMBH)与星系关联的认识。这些发现提出了若干超出当前 X 射线望远镜能力范围的激动人心的问题,需在今后二十年的天文台予以解决。随着新天文台窥探早期宇宙,我们将开始理解 SMBH 婴儿期(在 )的物理性质与人口统计,并探究其吸积对首批星系形成的影响( 2.1)。我们还将能理解星系中全部黑洞种群在宇宙历史(在 1-6)中的吸积与演化,包括低吸积率、重度遮蔽的 AGN,其光度超出当前 X 射线巡天所能触及的范围(2.2 与 2.3),从而使我们能够解析 SMBH 增长与其环境之间的联系。
