当我们追溯宇宙到早期时刻时，我们发现物质被压缩到高密度，这与黑洞奇点处的行为有些相似。弦理论在解释黑洞内部结构方面取得了进展，因此我们希望将从黑洞中学到的思想外推到早期宇宙。如果我们假设想要早期宇宙最可能的状态，那么我们应该考察描述一般黑洞的状态类型。这表明早期宇宙中的物质具有确定的状态方程。量子效应可以在黑洞中跨越宏观距离，这些效应在理解早期宇宙时也可能很重要。
