著名红超巨星大犬座VY的光度（L ~ 4 - 5 x 10e5 Lsun）通过其光谱能量分布和距离得到了很好的确定，并将其置于冷超巨星经验光度上限附近。相比之下，其表面温度从根本上定义不清。这两点都与Massey、Levesque和Plez（2006）近期的一篇论文相矛盾。讨论了其对赫罗图上位置及其视大小的影响。
