ThunderKAT 是 MeerKAT 的图像平面暂现源计划。2010 年提出且至今未变的目标,是通过射电辐射(常结合其他波长的观测)发现、辨识并理解高能天体物理过程。通过对银道面同步辐射暂现源(跨越一系列致密吸积体及其他爆发现象)的全面互补巡天与监测,并探索河外同步辐射暂现源的不同族群(微类星体、超新星以及可能未知的暂现现象)——既来自直接巡天也来自共生观测——我们将革新对动态且爆发的暂现射电流天的理解。除执行我们自身的定向计划外,我们已与其他 MeerKAT 大巡天项目(LSPs)达成协议,也将搜索它们的数据中的暂现源。这种对其他巡天的共生使用在 2016 年仍是我们关键计划目标之一,意味着 MeerKAT LSPs 联合起来将产生迄今规模最大的 GHz 频段射电暂现源计划。
