总结了本地星系群星系的星际形成历史。三个大型螺旋星系逐个讨论，而关于本地星系群矮星系的讨论集中于其差异与共性。尽管本地星系群的星系在其星际形成和富化历史上即便在相同的形态类型下也表现出惊人的多样性，但它们仍共享许多普遍的全局属性。星系质量和环境效应(如辐射压和潮汐剥离)是其演化的主要决定性因素。低质量矮不规则星系很可能演化为矮球面星系。
