盘加热的起源

摘要
通过观测中等倾角盘状星系的光谱吸收线,我们得以确定其组成恒星在三维空间中的随机运动幅度。这种对速度椭球形状的完整测量,是诊断产生随机运动的“加热”机制的有效工具。分析表明,主要的加热过程随星系类型而变化:对于早型盘状星系,次要并合主导加热;而对于晚型系统,旋涡密度波是最重要的机制。
